Summer Hjome Maintenance

Summer Home Maintenance Checklist

Summer is the perfect time to tackle some of your annual home maintenance checklist! Keeping up with home maintenance and showing your home a little TLC is important! Take advantage of the long days and nice weather in the summer to knock out some of your home maintenance repairs. We put together a helpful Summer Home Maintenance Checklist:

• Air Conditioning Service– Schedule Air Conditioning maintenance every 6 months. Keeping up with regular A/C maintenance will extend the life of your unit(s) and it will help prevent costly A/C repairs/replacements.

• Check for Outdoor Leaks– Check your faucets/hoses and sprinkler system for leaks. Leaks can increase your water bill and can damage your lawn and landscape.

• Chimney Cleaning– Summer is the ideal time to schedule a chimney cleaning service to clean your chimney. When fall/winter rolls around your fireplace chimney will be clean and ready to be used.

• Clean and Organize Your Garage– At the end of summer you can put away toys and sporting equipment that you won’t be using for a while. This is also a great time to dust, sweep and clean your garage floors.

• Clean Dryer Vent and Exhaust Duct– This routine maintenance item is important to manage a few times a year. Clogged lint and dust that gets trapped in your dryer vents are a potential fire hazard.

• Clean the Gutters and Downspouts– Storms and high winds can contribute to the amount of debris in your gutters and downspouts. At the end of the summer, schedule a time to have your gutters and downspouts cleaned out by a professional.

• Clean the Garbage Disposal and Dishwasher– From time to time it is a good idea to clean your garbage disposal and dishwasher with vinegar and water.

• Dust Your Ceiling Fan Blades- A few times a year, or more often, you should clean the dust off the blades on your ceiling fans. You can use a vacuum attachment, or you can buy a long duster that is specifically made to reach and clean ceiling fan blades in tall rooms.

• Exterior Paint Touch-Ups– Summer is a great time to knock this out as a weekend summer house project. Touch-up outdoor caulk (around doors and windows) and touch-up paint on your house and around your windows.

• Have Your Home Pressure Washed- Once a year, schedule a professional to come out to pressure wash the exterior of your home, including the patios, porches, walkways, and driveway.

• Inspect Fencing– Inspect the fencing along the perimeter of your property a few times a year. This is a great time of year to reinforce, reseal, re-stain, repaint, etc.

• Inspect Your Windows and Doors– Summer is the ideal time to check the caulk seal on your windows and doors. Re-caulking helps increase your home’s energy efficiency and helps keep insects and water from seeping in.

• Schedule a Roof Inspection– As summer comes to an end, schedule a roof inspection. It is important to keep your roof properly maintained so that you can get as many years as possible out of it before you need a roof replacement.

• Vacuum the Vents– Every few months or so it is a good idea to get in the habit of vacuuming the vents in your home. This includes bathroom fans and air conditioning supply and return vents.

• Wash Windows Inside and Outside- Wash your windows, both inside and out, in the summertime. You won’t believe how much more natural light you will have, and you will be able to see out of your windows more clearly.
