Q: What’s the difference between a spec home and a custom home?

A: A spec home is a house that the builder decides to build in which they are selecting all the finishes and the floor plans. Typically, a buyer does not have any input in the design of a spec home but will be able to help select some of the finishes depending on how far along construction is when it is listed for sale. A custom home is specifically designed and created to be tailored to you. You have a hand in every decision and nuance when you are building a custom home. Your custom home is designed to fit your specific lifestyle from top to bottom, inside and out.

Q: How long does it take to build a custom home? 

A: Each custom home is different, and no two homes take the same amount of time to be built.  Many custom homes take longer than spec homes to build, since they are typically more complex and intricate.  A custom home on average can take anywhere from 12 to 18 months from start to finish.  Devonshire Custom Homes provides our customers with a timeline of their custom home build.

Q: Do I need to have a lot already, or can my builder help me find a lot to build my custom home? 

A: If you don’t already have the perfect lot for your custom home, your builder should be able to help you find one.  It is important to look for lots in your price range and in the neighborhood(s) that fit your criteria.  Devonshire Custom Homes purchases lots for our customers to build on, and we also work with many customers who already have a lot to build on.
