CUSTOMIZE YOUR WINE STORAGE

CUSTOMIZE YOUR WINE STORAGE & STORE WINE PROPERLY

Customize your wine storage!  There’s nothing too big or small when it comes to custom wine storage! Design your wine collection’s custom storage area to fit your personal style and accommodate your space. Once you have selected the style and size that you want, the next step is to plan to control the climate.  After all, you want to properly store your wine collection!

Climate:
First and foremost, cool climate control is an essential element when planning and designing your wine storage space. Controlling the temperature and the humidity of your wine storage area ensures that your wine will age properly. Refrigeration systems are available in a variety of options and some are even equipped with thermostats that can be controlled remotely. Wine hates heat…so anything above 70 degrees Fahrenheit can damage your wine. The ideal temperature for wine storage is around 55 degrees Fahrenheit (give or take a couple degrees). Proper humidity levels prevent corks from drying out and prevents oxygen from seeping into your wine bottles. Oxygen oxidizes wine and it makes it taste bad (undrinkable). Controlling the climate is one of the most important parts of wine storage.

Insulation:
Second, insulation is necessary to keep your wine storage area free from mold and bacteria. Proper insulation is a requirement for your custom wine storage. You want to keep your precious wines in a cool and humid controlled environment.

Dark Bottles:
Third, light (specifically UV light) prematurely ages wine. So naturally, wine and sunlight do not mix. Although white wines are more fragile and susceptible to light…UV light also ages red wines. Wines are typically bottled and stored in colored or dark bottles; this helps block out light and protects the quality of the wine.

Sideways Storage:
Fourth, wine bottles should be stored on their sides. This keeps the cork wet which prevents the cork from drying out and shrinking. Dry corks can allow oxygen to seep in, ultimately damaging your wine. We learned earlier that oxygen is not your wine’s friend! Fifth, when you store your wine on its side you can fit more bottles in collection and in your storage space!

Whether you are looking for an intimate space for a small wine collection or a large room/cellar for a vast array of bottles, your wine should be stored carefully and properly. You want to have total control over the environment (including the temperature and humidity) in the room where you store your precious wines.

We’d love to help you design and customize your wine storage so you can store your wine properly in your new custom home! Cheers!
