PREPARE FOR HURRICANE SEASON

PREPARE FOR HURRICANE SEASON

Natural Disasters, like hurricanes, can strike without much warning.  Without proper preparation your home could suffer severe damage.  It is important to prepare your home for any extreme weather situations that may arise.  Hurricane Season lasts from June 1st through November 30th every year, and we have a list to help you prepare for hurricane season:

  1. Inspect Your Rain Gutters and Downspouts to make sure they are tightly secured to your house and that they are clear of leaves and other debris.
  2. Have Your Trees Trimmed to make sure that damaged limbs are removed and will not cause damage during a storm.
  3. Protect All Windows and Glass Doors with storm shutters or 5/8-inch plywood that is properly secured over all exposed glass. Long screws are best when using plywood to secure your windows.
  4. Buy A Battery-Operated Radio with Extra Batteries so you can stay up to date with the latest weather reports and alerts in your area in the event of a power outage.
  5. Buy A Battery-Operated Cell Phone Charger so that you can keep in communication in the event of a power outage.
  6. Stock Flashlights, Batteries and Candles in the event of a power outage.
  7. Plan for Pets so that if you need to evacuate you have a safe place to go with your pets.
  8. Pack a “Go Bag” with important medications, a first-aid kit, maps, and copies of important papers that you might need in the event of an evacuation.
  9. Plan for Possible Flood Damage so you can take as many precautions as possible to prevent your home from flooding. Sandbags are often used to keep water out of homes and garages and your local city government might be giving these out before storms.
  10. Seal Windows and Doors as tightly as possible if you live in hurricane-prone areas such as the state of Florida.
  11. Clear Your Yard so that objects such as furniture, grills, potted plants, and any other lawn accessories are not objects that can be thrown around in high-speed winds. Tie down larger objects like outdoor dog houses, sheds, playhouses, since sets and boats.
  12. Stock Cabinets if you have to shelter in place, you want to have plenty of non-perishable food and water on hand.

The more prepared you are for a natural disaster, like a hurricane, the more likely it will be for you to safely weather the toughest storms.  Take the time now to equip your home with everything you need to survive a hurricane.
