1. Create and Stick to Your Budget- This is the first place to start when you are considering building a custom home. Be realistic and factor in things like your monthly expenses.  Keep in mind your custom home will require upkeep and routine maintenance.
2. Decide What You Want Ahead of Time- Take time to plan your style, layout and must have design elements. Your builder can help you make decisions where you have questions or need recommendations.
3. Do Your Research Before Hiring a Custom Home Builder- Make a list of questions to ask builders when you are deciding on a builder to hire. Ask to go inside a home or two so you can see each builder’s work in person.
4. Keep a Flexible Timeline- Set your expectations during the building process to allow for hiccups and things to arise that are out of your control. For example, rain can cause delays during some stages of the construction process.
5. Make Sure Everything is in Writing- This way there aren’t any surprises for the homeowner or the builder throughout the process.
