Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Home

While we know that while everyone is practicing social distancing this is a good time to review tips for maintaining a healthy home as well.

In addition to keeping your family free from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is also important to practice the following tips, courtesy of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development:

If your family has asthma or allergies:

  • Wash bedding in hot water and detergent every week. Make sure you dry clothing completely
  • Use a zippered mattress and pillow covers
  • Clean your pet beds and litter boxes frequently
  • Avoid air fresheners, incense, and candles

Keeping Mold and Moisture at Bay:

  • Install and use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens
  • Clean up water and puddles from leaks, ceilings or walls, and fix leaks right away
  • Throw away any cardboard, carpeting, insulation, foam padding, or fabrics if they have been wet for more than two days, or if they have mold

Minimize pests by:

  • Seal cracks and openings throughout the home
  • Store food in pest-resistant containers
  • If needed, use sticky-traps and baits in closed containers, along with least toxic pesticides such as boric acid powder
  • Seal up cracks around exterior doors, window, pipes, and other holes to the outside

Keep your home well maintained:

  • Inspect, clean and repair your home routinely.
  • Take care of minor repairs and problems before they become large repairs and problems.
