Boundaries

Shore Acres is on the east coast of Pinellas County, extending from Mangrove Bay and Tanglewood into Old Tampa Bay. It is connected to Snell Isle and Northeast Park by bridges.  The area includes all land north of Smacks Bayou and Snell Isle Bridge, South of 62nd Avenue NE, west of Venetian Isles subdivision or the waters of Tampa Bay, east of Placido Bayou between and including 45th Avenue NE through 62nd Avenue NE, east of Shore Acres Boulevard including Shore Acres Boulevard and Overlook Drive NE.

 

Shore Acres History

 

Shore Acres was originally an area of pine woods, marsh and palmetto. In 1925, Shore Acres Properties Inc. platted the overlook section with streets named after states. Developer Nathaniel J. Upham, began to sell tracts of land in the 1950s. The first large scale development was 350 homes around Butterfly Lake followed by Waterfront Estates, Venetian Isles and Ponderosa Shores.

As a result of its geography, Shore Acres has many waterfront homes, most of which include docks. Shore Acres architecture includes a mix of elegant, modern multi- level waterfront estates that overlook Tampa Bay, immaculate bayou-facing homes with pools, Florida block bungalows, and high-end condominium homes.

The neighborhood includes a fire station on the island which serves Shore Acres as well as its tony neighbors on Snell Isle and Venetian Isles. Shore Acres has its own small shopping area with a food market, butcher, dry cleaners, as well as two churches – Lutheran Church of the Cross and Northeast Presbyterian. Just over the Snell Isle Bridge is St. Thomas Episcopal and St. Raphael Catholic Church.

Some of St. Petersburg’s best schools are located in Shore Acres. From the renowned Shore Acres public elementary school, to some exceptional private K-12 schools, such as Canterbury, St. Raphael’s, LCC and the nearby Shorecrest Preparatory School.

Toddler care is available at the recreation center and the Lutheran Church of the Cross. Also, Shore Acres has a top notch head start program. Private schools are offered at Lutheran Church of the Cross, St. Thomas and St. Raphael.

Al Lang Stadium

Al Lang Stadium is a downtown St. Petersburg waterfront baseball park. For many decades, the stadium was the spring training home for a series of Major League Baseball clubs and the summer home of their affiliated minor league teams. Since 2011, it has served as the home pitch for the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer club of the North American Soccer League.

Things to Do

 

In the heart of the neighborhood is Shore Acres Recreation Center. The center offers classes in everything from computers to step aerobics and more. Here you’ll find an aquatic facility with a wade pool perfect for toddlers and a six lane pool, covered playground, half court basketball court, picnic shelter and a variety of programs for youth, teens and adults.

In Shore Acres you will also find some of the City’s nicest neighborhood parks. Denver Park has four lighted tennis courts, baseball field, basketball court and shaded playground area. A great place to take the children and the grandchildren to fish is the waterfront play area next to the fire station. Puryear Park has five lighted basketball courts, sand volleyball pit, eight lighted tennis courts, one baseball field and a walking trail around the park. For Golf enthusiasts, nearby is public Mangrove Bay and Cypress Links golf course facilities and the private Snell Isle Vinoy course. Baseball lovers will enjoy the fields on 62nd Avenue NE adjacent to the Mangrove Bay Golf Course.
