8 TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR HOME

8 TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR HOME

Home maintenance is important!  We recommend that you put together an annual home maintenance plan on a monthly calendar.  We’ve listed 8 tips for maintaining your home to help get your list started :

  1. Hire a Lawn Maintenance Company- Hire a lawn maintenance company to take care of your outdoor lawn, plants, flowers, bushes, etc.  Schedule them to come out on a regular basis, for maintenance.
  1. Wash Your Windows and Doors Once a year, do a thorough, deep clean, washing of the inside and outside of your windows and doors.  You can outsource this project or do it yourself.  Please stay safe if you decide to do this yourself.
  1. Hire a Pressure Washing Company- Pressure Washing companies know the safest and most efficient way to clean your home’s exterior surfaces.  Outsource your exterior maintenance: cleaning your siding, maintaining your deck, cleaning your pavers on your driveway, patio, and porch(es), etc.
  1. Heating and Air Conditioning Service- No matter what kind of HVAC unit(s) you have, you should have your equipment inspected, cleaned, and serviced at least once a year. Schedule to have the heating system checked in the fall and the air conditioning system checked in the spring.
  1. Plumbing Maintenance- Make sure everyone who lives in your home knows the location(s) of your main water shutoff valve… and make sure they can use it properly.  If you are not sure, a plumber can show you what to do and how to label your plumbing equipment.  If a pipe bursts…you will need to stop the flow of leaking water quickly,  to prevent extensive damage to your belongings and your home.  Once or twice a year, test the main water shutoff valve to make sure it is working properly.  Do not flush paper towels, feminine products, disposable diapers, cat litter, hair or other items (other than toilet paper) down your toilets.
  1. Hot Water Heater Maintenance- Once or twice a year check the temperature setting on your hot water heater(s).  Running the burner at lower temperatures saves energy costs and extends the life of these appliances.  Most models should be set between 120 degrees and 140 degrees.
  1. Clean Your Gutters- Call in an expert to do this a few times a year…especially before a big storm or rainy season (if possible).  Leave this job to the experts who know what they are doing up there.
  1. Trim Your Trees- One big storm, or strong wind, can send tree limbs and branches crashing down on your roof.  Schedule regular tree maintenance for your property and keep your trees trimmed (especially if they are close to your house).

Keeping up with your routine home maintenance is important, and over time it will save you from costly repairs.  We recommend that you come up with a yearlong home maintenance plan on a calendar!  Setting monthly tasks for your home is a great way to keep up with your home’s maintenance plan.  Here’s an example of one you might want to use to help get you started:  Home Maintenance Plan.
